The Company
It may sound obvious, but make sure you are happy with the person that you are
dealing with. If he/she is abrupt, rude, bad tempered, patronising or too pushy,
walk away (just imagine how unbearable he will be on the big day when adrenaline
levels are high and he needs
to get that special shot). Is he receptive to your concerns and requests or does
he simply tell you how he
will film your day? Does he rely on bombarding you with technical information or
does he explain everything you want to know? Has he returned your call or
email?
Don't be pressured, If you are unsure go elsewhere. More importantly, shop
around and compare
Go
off your first instincts - you're usually right!
Judging work
Ask to see a sample of their work. Demo discs are fine, they will provide an
overview of the videographers work, but they are carefully edited and will only
include the very best sequences and audio recordings. Judge the way it
is edited and see how it flows to tell the story logically from beginning
to end. Would you be happy if this was your Wedding DVD?
Camera work
Look at how the shots change. Are they too fancy and overpowering, worse still does it jump and
cut abruptly? Are the shots smooth, in focus? Do they wobble and shake? Is the
colour good or does it look washed out - too bright or too dark? Does the camera
operator zoom in and out making you feel sick and dizzy? Do the people featured look natural and
unaware of the presence of a camera? Does it keep your interest? Does the whole
production look professional?
Soundtrack
Try not to be too judgmental of the music used; this may well have been the
choice of the couple concerned. Can you hear the vows and the speeches clearly?
Did you see any microphones or extra lighting and was it obvious?
Costs
Will you be charged for your videographer attending the rehearsal? How many
copies of the finished film will you receive? How much are extra copies? Will
the camera operators require refreshments on the day? Will you be invoiced for
expenses (e.g. car parking?) Are there any hidden extras?
